Ensei:
Again, sorry about not updating. My first exam week just finished today, so I’m now taking my time to update the blog, because it seems duster have no interest in it anymore. That sounded rather depressing, so let’s talk about movies shall we? This year we have pretty big names for the lineup. It was rather surprising how many remakes and adaptation they had picked, for the better or the worst. So a personal list will do nicely for this post, instead of a list of coming up movies.
===================
Watchmen (March 6th)
I’m sure many of you have already seen this trailer flowing around the net for sometimes now. At first I wasn’t familiar with the name Watchmen, because it was different from your average everyday heroes from the comics. From what I had gather from friends and acquaintance, the story was probably the most complex American comic out there and perhaps the best release by DC. The comic illustrated the alternate universe of the world back in the 1980’s. Instead of given super powers to all the heroes, many of them was only human. As the story goes on, it portrayed more of a person’s power in society rather than supernatural powers that can save mankind. This interest me greatly because it really wasn’t your average hero going through his or her changes and s/he must decide what to do with the newfound power.
For the trailer itself, it was also an attention grabber. Just as the trailer show, the visionary director was the same one for 300. The choice of the bgm is nicely used, just as in 300. So looking forward to this one.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1st)
It was a relief when they announced the new X-Men movie wasn’t a sequel to the third movie. With the director changed after the second movie, the expectation went down just as fast as me ejecting the DVD out of the PlayStation3, realizing it still wasn’t worth of my forty dollars on the trilogy, just because the third movie was in it. Now with this new movie, the less cg was shown, it actually got me excited. cg is a great tool for the physical impossibles and the stunts, but it does not do the movie any just if the directors decided to abuse it (like me abusing holy in Final Fantasy Tactics on the enemies… no! bad ensei, let the bad guys win at least once! they deserve it!). Anyhow, with the main character being my favorite X-Men and actor, this is a must watch for me.
Star Trek (May 8th)
My knowledge of the story is zero, and my interest of finding the information before watching the movie is about the same. I cannot bring myself to like a completely sci-fi film – an easy example would be Star Wars. Although with me just sitting by my desk, I still have information drilling into my head because people around me are talking about it. Granted, I don’t mind, but because of this I might have to spend extra money to watch it in IMAX when I’m already planning waste my money on Resident Evil 5. Although I do have to admit, it looks great, since they have been telling me how the older films/series was rather plain.
Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen (June 26th)
My face has been point and laugh at because I bashed the first movie when the teaser trailer first shown in theaters, but ended up liking the movie when I watched with the people point and laugh at me. I have great friends.
Story aside, I have to admit the story was terrible with the additional unbearable dialogue for the first movie made it hard to watch. Then when the robots started to transform and break out their weapons, it was just awesome scream at your face. I love to model in Maya, and watching all of the parts transform just bring me to tears. As simple as it sounds, I’m willing to watch the movie just because of robot fighting. Yes.
G.I.Joe (August 7th)
Seems to be another one of those films that only do the visual the just, not much to the story. I heard that in American, many boys loves the toys back when they were still in elementary school. It just happens that almost all of my friends are male, I guess this is another extra money sucker.
9 (September 9th)
This was a jaw drop for me. No, it does not have the detail graphic you seen in the transformers, it does not have the colorful visual in Pixar films. Yet, with the featured music Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria the trailer made the movie radiant much more than most the animation trailer I have seen(ie. Monster vs. Alien or Up). Perhaps it was because the story is directed by Tim Burton? His way of telling the story fit much of my taste, like his recent films Sweeney Todd and Corpse Bride (Ah, on the side. Some people, even me, got confused by this when the trailer of Coraline said the director was the same person who worked Nightmare Before Christmas, some thought it was Burton. No actually it was one of the co-directors from that movie, meaning no Coraline wasn’t made by Burton).
A little background story about this. I’m currently a member of Siggraph at my school, and it just happen that my TA told me, 9 was actually a short film shown during Siggraph meetings back in 2005. Addition to that, the same TA also told me his friend is now working on a new project with Burton called, Alice in Wonderland. I’m sure many people had heard about this film but it seems to be a mix of real actors and 3D, since it involved hand rigging for characters, as my TA stated.
Well this the end of my rant, I’m sure there are other films many other people would like to see, but they just does not interest me as much as those ones i listed above. So go out and look for your own list, they have good amount of the movies coming out this year anyway =D
